About The Metals

  1. Tungsten Carbide - Used for scratch and wear resistant jewelry, oil field exploration, bullets, safes, heat and wear resistant applications, hard facing applications, machining, tooling, metal cutting, shaping & forming. Common Types: Drills, Wear Parts, End Mills, Taps, Punches, Dies, Indexable Inserts, Circuit Board Drills, Saw Tips, Balls, Burrs, Mining Bits
  2. High Speed Steel - Tooling used for machining, cutting, shaping and forming metals, wood & plastic. Forms of HSS include drills, end mills, cutters and various types of tooling.
    • Common grades: M1, M2, M35, M42, Rex 76, M48, T1, T15
    • Molybdenum (Mo), aka Molly - used for high temp applications.
    • Common forms: Powder, bars, tubes, coils, cast, single crystals.
    • Titanium (Ti): Aircraft and Aerospace, Medical, Plating, Machining and Engine parts. Used for changing temperatures and absorbing and displacing heat, corrosion.(See http://www.engineershandbook.com/Tables/titaniumgrades.htm for grades).
    • Tool Steel (Low Grade High Speed Steel ) - Low tungsten, chrome and molly. Tooling used for machining, cutting, shaping and forming metals, wood & plastic. Forms of HSS include drills, end mills, cutters and various types of tooling.
    • Common grades: H10, H11, H12, H13, D2, D4
  3. Nickel - Pure nickel can be used to make various nickel based alloys and used for plating
    • Common grades: Inconel, a.k.a Inco, 718, 600, 601, 625 (Registered trademark of Special Metals Corp.)
    • Used for applications such as building machinery, tooling, ships, military vehicles, good for salt water because of not corroding or eroding in harsh environments.
    • Nickel Chrome Ingots - Refinery ends and scrap lots
    • Nickel - CU Monels - used for saltwater applications and for its corrosion resistance. Valves, pumps, propellers, shafts and marine hardware.
    • Common Grades: Monel-R, K-Monel, Monel-C, Monel- D, Monel-400, Monel-D, Monel-G, etc.
    • Waspalloy - Ni-Cr-Co Alloy - Jet turbines, high temp hardware, good for heat resistance, high strength, high stress level.
    • Hastalloy - Nickel Chrome alloy - used for acid and sulfur resistance and high temp stability.
    • Used in plate valves, billets, bars, wire, electrodes and pipe and tubing. Common Hastalloys grades are B, C, C276.
  4. Cobalt & Cobalt Based Alloys - Uses: Medical, Machining, Aircraft parts, Ships & Freighters. Used for strength and durability.
    • Common Grades: Stellite HS 25, HS 31, HS 6, HS 12, HS 21 - Machining and high temp. applications Star-J & Tantung - Blades, Machining and tooling F75 - Body part replacement, Hi Temp applications.
  5. Tungsten & Tungsten Alloys - Used for strength and durability and heat resistant properties. Tungsten filaments are used in light bulbs.
    • Grades: Densilloy, Heavimet, Mallory
    • Common uses: tooling, machining, cutting blades, end mills, drills, dies and ammo.Tungsten pigtails w/aluminum - Used in electronics
